CommWell Health is a National Health Service Corps (NHSC) approved site. The NHSC is a program run by the federal government under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The NHSC helps bring providers to areas of the United States that have limited access to quality health care. As part of the program, students, residents and health care providers that are committed to furthering the NHSC’s goal of ensuring health care access for all populations, are awarded scholarships or participation in the Student to Service Loan Repayment program.
Each year, Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) scores ranging from 0 to 25 for primary care and mental health and 0 to 26 for dental are awarded to each NHSC –approved site. The higher the score a facility receives, the greater the need is in that area for quality health care. These scores are awarded to each site based on the population-to-primary care physician ratio, the percent of the population with incomes below 100% of the poverty level, the infant mortality rate or low birth weight rate, and travel time or distance to the nearest available source of care.
